One of the ongoing conversations I find myself having with my clients is around the topic of sales.
A lot of entrepreneurs are afraid to sell because they are afraid of being salesy. I get it. I come from a marketing background and when I worked in the corporate world I had a sales team that I would hand the lead off to after bringing them in. I didn’t have any sales experience or training when I started my business and I didn’t have a sales department to hand leads off to. That was when I realized that the sales department was going to have to be me. If I wanted to make sales, I was going to have to sell.
I went from hating sales to being confident in selling and today I want to walk you through the process I personally went through to get there.
I CHANGED MY MINDSET
The first thing I did was that I shifted my mindset. I stopped saying and believing things like “I hate sales” and “I suck at sales” and instead I started saying “I’m amazing at sales!”. I also started to change the way I viewed and talked about sales. The way I choose to look at it now is that it’s an invitation for people to work with me. It’s a way for me to empower others to make a decision instead of me making it for them. When we don’t sell, we decide that the answer is no 100% of the time. If you want to change that you have to be willing to invite others to work with you and empower them to make the decision.
I PRACTICED, PRACTICED, PRACTICED
Listen, I know that getting on sales calls can make you cringe. I know the feeling of not wanting to pitch your offers on social media and not wanting to share the price. I avoided it for a long time too. However, the only way you are going to get good at selling is the same way you get good at anything else. You have to practice, practice, practice. The best thing I did for my business was get on call after call after call after call. I went on a spree of getting on about 40-50 calls within 2 months. It was a lot and guess what? By the end of those two months I was as confident as can be about getting on sales calls! I overcame all of my fears and all of the things that made it challenging for me to get on those calls. I had to go through it in order to get to the other side. It’s the only way to do it.
I INVESTED IN A BUSINESS COACH TO TEACH ME ABOUT SALES
The final but really important thing I did was that I decided to work with a coach to teach me about sales. I went through a sales training so that I could develop the skills that I needed as an entrepreneur in order to be skilled at selling. Here’s what I know to be true about business: If I want to learn something and learn it quick the best way to do it is to invest. Sales are not something I have time to wait on, so I invested.
If you’re struggling with sales it’s time to change that and to change it NOW. Sales are the oxygen of your business and without them it’s going to be really hard for you to survive. You have to be willing to learn about sales, get confident around them and create a process that converts for you and your business if you want to reach your business and life goals.
